I am originally from Hong Kong, where I built my career as a town planner after completing a Master’s degree in Urban Planning at the University of Hong Kong. For 10 years, I worked as a Housing Officer in the Housing Department, managing complex rezoning and planning applications for public housing and mixed-use developments. My role involved conducting feasibility studies, analysing housing data, and preparing strategic planning reports. I also collaborated closely with multidisciplinary teams, bringing together a wide range of inputs to support planning submissions and presentations for high-level meetings.

In 2023, I relocated to the UK and took a career break of around two years to focus on my family. During this time, I made a conscious effort to stay connected to my profession by refreshing my knowledge of the UK planning system and relevant regulations.

When I decided to return to work, I was motivated and ready—but I quickly realised that re-entering the industry was not straightforward. Despite applying for a range of planning roles in both the public and private sectors, I was rarely shortlisted for interviews. I did secure an interview for a Planning Policy Officer / Senior Planning Officer role at a council, but I was not selected. I recognised that the main barrier was my lack of UK-based experience. While this was challenging, it strengthened my determination to find a pathway back into the profession.

My turning point came when STEM Returners contacted me after I sent my CV. They identified my transferable skills, particularly in stakeholder management, and encouraged me to apply for a Consents Officer role at National Grid through their programme.

The support I received from STEM Returners was invaluable. My Programme Career Coach guided me through the interview process, helping me structure my answers using the STAR method and advising on how to approach different types of questions. She also suggested thoughtful questions to ask interviewers. This preparation made a significant difference to my confidence and performance. Throughout the placement, STEM Returners checked in regularly, providing ongoing encouragement and support.

Through the programme, I gained hands-on experience working on Development Consent Order-related activities for National Grid’s Grimsby to Walpole Project. This gave me valuable insight into the scale and complexity of nationally significant infrastructure projects in the UK. I found the role particularly rewarding, as it sits at the intersection of planning, engineering, and environmental disciplines—closely aligning with my background and interests.

Following this experience, I applied for a permanent Consents Officer role at National Grid and was delighted to receive an offer. This marks an exciting new chapter in my career, where I can contribute to infrastructure projects that support the UK’s transition to a cleaner and more secure energy system.

Looking back, I never imagined that I would transition from town planning in Hong Kong to working in a major electricity infrastructure company in the UK. This opportunity has allowed me to broaden my professional horizons and develop in a new sector. I am incredibly grateful to STEM Returners and National Grid for giving me this opportunity.

I would highly recommend the STEM Returners programme. It is well-structured, supportive, and genuinely focused on helping returners rebuild their careers. The mentoring aspect was particularly valuable. I was paired with a mentor, who supported me over several months, including preparing for my interview for the permanent role.

For anyone considering returning to their profession after a career break, my advice is simple: it is absolutely possible. With the right support and mindset, you can rebuild your career and even discover new opportunities you may not have previously considered. Programmes like STEM Returners, along with supportive employers, can make a real difference in helping you take that next step.
