What was your working background before your career break?
I worked in Formula 1 as a senior design engineer for about 12 years.
Tell us about your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?
After completing a Msc in Philosophy of Science I decided to explore opportunities outside of F1 and I was keen to move into a STEM policy role. I worked in UKRI for three years and really enjoyed doing something completely different and gaining a new perspective on research and funding.
What made you want to return to the industry?
I really enjoyed challenging myself by working in a completely different area, but it made me realise how much I valued solving engineering problems. Which ultimately motivated me to return to a role in engineering.
What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?
My role in F1 was very specialised and primarily focused on CAD design so I found it very challenging to transition to a role in mechanical design in other industries. At the time, it felt as though returning to university might be the only viable route. However, after just buying a house, that wasn’t a feasible option, which made the situation feel quite limiting.
Why did you approach STEM Returners?
Thankfully they found me! I hadn’t heard of STEM Returners before, and they came across my CV and gave me a call. They explained the programme, and it immediately sounded like exactly what I needed. I never would have considered applying for the role I eventually secured, as I assumed I wouldn’t have the right experience and that the process would be highly competitive.
How did STEM Returners help?
They walked me through the whole process and provided excellent support throughout. I received really helpful feedback on my application as well as great support and advice prior to the interview stage. It was an incredibly positive process knowing that there was an employer willing to help get me back into engineering and that STEM Returners were there to support me through the process. I had regular check ins with them after I started which was really helpful to have that extra support too.
What was the end result?
I got the job after the programme and secured a permanent position with UKAEA. I’m finally getting to do the type of work I’ve always wanted to do and it’s really exciting.
How has this changed your career?
It has made such a huge difference. The opportunities I’ve been given here and the skills I’m developing will open so many doors for me in the future. For the first time in a long time, I’m incredibly happy and hopeful about my career prospects. This wouldn’t have happened without a programme like STEM Returners.
What would you say about the programme overall?
It’s been a real lifeline for me. I never imagined I’d get the opportunity to work on the things I’m working on now and I’m so grateful I was able to take advantage of this opportunity. The mentoring programme was also incredibly helpful in getting some extra support as I started my new role.
Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?
Just go for it. Don’t worry about your experience or background or how long you’ve been away. Yes, there will always be an element of imposter syndrome, and work to rebuild confidence after a period of being away, but my experience has been so positive I’d definitely encourage you to apply!
