A Pathway Back to Professional Engineering: Sarika’s Story

Tell us about yourself.

I am from the UK and was educated in London. I hold a Master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering from Imperial College London and an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering. Throughout my career, I have worked across a diverse range of engineering and project leadership roles, including Highways Engineer, Petroleum Engineer, Reservoir Engineer, Production Engineer, Planning Engineer, Economist, Business Development Professional, Senior Programme Manager, and more recently, Project Manager.

What was your working background before your career break?

Before my career break, I had built an extensive career across the engineering and energy sectors, working in both technical and management positions. My experience spans infrastructure, oil and gas, programme management, business development, planning, and project delivery, providing me with a broad and adaptable skill set.

Tell us about your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?

I took a career break of approximately three years after my mother was diagnosed with dementia. During this time, my focus was on supporting and caring for my family.

What made you want to return to the industry?

My return to industry was sparked by an opportunity presented through STEM Returners. I was approached about a role and invited to interview with Frazer-Nash Consultancy in March 2025. Learning about the opportunity reignited my enthusiasm for returning to engineering and project management.

What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?

I did not encounter significant barriers when applying for roles. However, after a lengthy career break, I naturally felt some anxiety and nervousness about returning to the workplace. I was keen to rebuild my professional confidence and re-establish myself within the industry.

Why did you approach STEM Returners?

STEM Returners offered a unique opportunity to reconnect with industry and demonstrate the value of my skills and experience. The programme provided a pathway back into a professional environment that recognised the contribution experienced returners can make.

How did STEM Returners help?

STEM Returners connected me with Frazer-Nash Consultancy and facilitated the opportunity to interview and return to industry. Their support helped bridge the gap between my career break and my return to professional engineering and project management.

What was the end result?

I was offered a position with Frazer-Nash Consultancy and successfully returned to industry. The opportunity enabled me to re-establish my career and continue my professional development.

How has this changed your career?

My career is firmly back on track. I am currently working towards Chartered Project Professional status and continuing to develop my expertise in project management. I am also proud to be a Fellow of the Institute of Highway Engineers.

What would you say about the programme overall?

The STEM Returners programme has been a tremendous success for me. It demonstrates the value that experienced professionals can bring when given the opportunity to return to industry.

Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?

Never turn down an opportunity. Keep an open mind, maintain an open-door policy towards new experiences, and be willing to embrace challenge and change. Sometimes the greatest achievements come from stepping outside your comfort zone and surprising yourself with what you can accomplish.
