I’m Jack, from Glasgow, and through my studies at City of Glasgow College, I proudly obtained HND level qualifications in both Engineering Systems and Draughting & Design. I progressed from school straight into college and therefore did not have much experience within any industry, excluding my studies. Although I was always passionate about Engineering and the Design process.
After I finished studying in 2018, I found it extremely difficult to get my foot in the door and personal circumstances not aligning at the time, I was forced to prioritise a steady well-paid job over my dream career path.
I wanted to return to the industry as it was always at the forefront of my mind. Seeing fellow students, peers and friends develop into a variety of professionals undoubtedly influenced my choice to take the leap.
While applying for a substantial amount of job roles, I quickly realised the challenges I faced. From entry level jobs needing time, years experience minimum to trainee positions being tailored towards a young demographic. I was truly disheartened and felt stuck before finding STEM Returners.
During my search I came across the STEM Returners advert and spoke to a STEM Returners Career Coach to see if they could help. After a short period of time, I had an interview with BAE Systems, in which STEM Returners helped me prepare for the interview with material, questions and tips.
The end result from the interview was BAE Systems offering me a 13-week placement. I have recently concluded the STEM Returners Programme and have been offered a full-time permanent position at BAE Systems. The opportunity STEM Returners have provided has allowed me to finally work within an engineering discipline, on incredible projects.
Although I was extremely sceptical and worried about this opportunity only being temporary, I was reassured by the STEM Returners team that a high percentage of people do move on to more permanent positions. I would massively encourage anyone to take advantage of this programme. The help, commitment and communication I received was over and beyond. I can’t express my gratitude enough.
