Taking time away from work allowed Osi to reassess his career and build new skills, but he never lost sight of his drive to make an impact.
With over 13 years of experience across multiple industries, he knew he had valuable expertise to offer. His return to engineering was more than just a new job—it was a chance to work on a project that will power millions of homes in the UK.
Here’s Osi’s story.
Tell us a little bit about you.
I am Osi Mohammed, based in Weston-Super Mare, UK. I hold a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering from Swansea University, as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Chemical Engineering. Over the years, I’ve developed a passion for quality management, process optimization, and data-driven decision making. My career has spanned across manufacturing, energy, and IT sectors, where I’ve focused on improving operational efficiency and ensuring high standards in project delivery.
What was your working background before your career break?
Before my career break, I accumulated over 13 years of experience in the energy, manufacturing, and IT sectors. I held various roles, including Project Manager, Quality Engineer, and Compliance Analyst.

Tell us about your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?
I took a career break to focus on personal matters and career development. This break lasted for approximately one year, during which I took the opportunity to upskill, pursue additional certifications, and engage in volunteer work. It gave me the time I needed to realign my professional goals.
What made you want to return to the industry?
I was eager to return to the industry because of my passion for quality management and process optimization. I wanted to contribute my experience to projects that have a lasting impact. The opportunity to work on the Hinkley Point C nuclear project, the largest infrastructure project in the UK, was a compelling reason to return, as it involves providing power to 6 million homes—a truly significant contribution to the UK’s energy future.
What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?
The primary challenge I faced was the gap in my employment history due to my career break. Initially, I felt unsure about how this gap would be perceived by potential employers. However, I focused on the value of my extensive experience and sought out opportunities that would appreciate my background, including the STEM Returners programme.
Why did you approach STEM Returners?
I approached STEM Returners because I knew they offered a structured, supportive platform to help individuals like me return to the workforce. The programme connected me with leading companies, and I was particularly excited to apply for roles that valued my experience and skill set, such as the opportunity at EDF Energy.
How did STEM Returners help?
STEM Returners provided crucial support through coaching, networking, and the chance to work with top-tier companies. Their structured programme boosted my confidence and allowed me to re-enter the workforce while receiving the guidance and mentorship needed to ensure my success. The programme also helped me feel part of a community of professionals navigating the returner journey.
What was the end result?
The end result was fantastic—after completing the 6-month STEM Returners programme with EDF Energy, I was offered a permanent position as a Project Quality Engineer. This role has been an incredible opportunity for me to apply my expertise while working on the Hinkley Point C nuclear project, which will power 6 million homes in the UK. The experience has been both professionally and personally fulfilling.
How has this changed your career?
This opportunity has reinvigorated my career, providing me with the chance to work on a major project that will have a lasting impact. It has also reaffirmed my belief in the importance of quality management and process optimization. The role has opened doors to new challenges and responsibilities, which will continue to shape my professional growth.
What would you say about the programme overall?
I wholeheartedly recommend the STEM Returners programme to anyone considering returning to work after a career break. It offers a supportive environment, invaluable coaching, and connections with top employers. It made the transition back to work seamless and provided me with the tools to succeed in a competitive job market.
Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?
My advice is to not let a career break hold you back. Trust in your abilities and the experience you bring. The STEM Returners programme offers an incredible opportunity to return to the industry with confidence, so take the leap and embrace the possibilities. The industry needs your skills, and with the right support, you can make a successful comeback.
