Tell us about you

I’m originally from Edinburgh and hold an MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I’ve always been passionate about problem-solving and technology, and I enjoy hands-on work that allows me to see real results. Outside of engineering, I’m also very creative — I’ve been involved in barbering and design projects, which have helped me develop strong practical and people skills.

What was your working background before your career break?

Before my career break, I worked as an electrician, gaining practical experience in electrical installation and maintenance. This hands-on experience complemented my academic background and helped me understand how engineering principles apply in real-world environments. I also worked as a barber for a few years before that, which helped grow my confidence and communication skills.

Ammar - a STEM returner

Tell us about your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?

After completing my degree, I took a break to explore other opportunities and focus on personal projects and family commitments. I also used this time to reassess my career direction and build transferable skills through self-employment and business management. My break lasted several years before deciding to return to engineering through the STEM Returners programme.

What made you want to return to the industry?

Engineering has always been my passion. I missed the sense of purpose that comes from solving technical
problems and contributing to innovative projects. I wanted to use my degree and previous experience to
make a positive impact and continue growing in a structured, technical environment.

What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?

The biggest challenge was explaining my career break and convincing employers that I still had relevant
technical knowledge and motivation. Many roles required recent experience, which made it difficult to get
past the initial application stage. It was frustrating at times because I knew I had the capability and
determination but just needed the opportunity to prove it.

Why did you approach STEM Returners?

I discovered STEM Returners while looking for ways to re-enter the engineering industry and was immediately drawn to the programme’s focus on supporting professionals like myself. It offered a clear, structured path back into industry, with understanding employers who value potential and transferable skills.

How did STEM Returners help?

STEM Returners provided exactly the bridge I needed. They supported me through the application process, prepared me for interviews, and matched me with Leonardo, who were open and supportive from the start. Having a dedicated point of contact throughout the process also made the transition back into engineering much smoother.

What was the end result?

The placement allowed me to rebuild confidence, refresh my technical skills, and demonstrate my value to
the team — leading to a permanent opportunity.

How has this changed your career?

It has completely reignited my career in engineering. I now have a clear path for progression, hands-on
experience in a major engineering company, and renewed confidence in my abilities. The experience has
shown me that a career break doesn’t define your future — determination and the right support do.

What would you say about the programme overall?

It’s an outstanding initiative that genuinely changes lives. STEM Returners doesn’t just open doors — it gives people the chance to restart their careers with confidence, support, and understanding. I’d highly
recommend it to anyone looking to re-enter the industry.

Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?

Don’t doubt yourself or your abilities. The skills and experience you’ve gained — even outside engineering —are valuable. Be honest about your journey, stay open to learning, and trust the process. With the right
mindset and the support of STEM Returners, getting back into the industry is absolutely achievable.
