David’s career began in the heart of the UK’s oil and gas sector. But like many early-career professionals, industry changes pushed him off course. He spent the next eight years in other roles, building new skills but never losing sight of his passion for design and engineering. When the time was right, he took a chance to return.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I am from Aberdeen, Scotland, which is widely known as the oil and gas capital of Europe. I’ve always had an interest in engineering and design; I would spend hours as a kid building Lego and Meccano sets. When I left secondary school, I pursued a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Mechanical Engineering, which provided me with a solid foundation in technical skills and problem-solving. I also had an opportunity to train as a draftsman while I was studying.

I joined the STEM returners program after an extended career break from the Oil and Gas industry. I was excited to accept a position at Wood PLC, a global engineering consultant, as a Junior designer.

Outside of work, I have many interests. I love to explore new places, and photography is a creative outlet for me, enabling me to capture and share the beauty I encounter in my adventures.

David - a STEM returner

What was your working background before your career break?

I worked in the Oil and Gas industry for two years as a trainee draftsman.

Why did you take a break from your career, and for how long?

I left the Oil and Gas industry during a downturn and had been away for approximately 8 years. During that time I worked in a number of other roles within different industries, such as retail and manufacturing, which allowed me to learn new skills.

What made you want to return to the industry?

After working for a number of years as an orthotic technician, I was looking to work in an industry that could offer long term career growth. I also wanted to return to a design based role where I could utilise more fully the engineering/drafting skills I had learned previously.

What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?

The biggest challenge I faced was having confidence in my own ability to return to the industry. Often, I would apply for roles and not receive any feedback, which was disheartening. Given my limited experience and the fact that it had been many years since I last worked in a design/drafting role, I often doubted my usefulness and felt uncertain about my prospects. This lack of response made me question my skills and whether I could successfully re-enter the field.

Why did you approach STEM Returners?

I had been looking for a career change for around a year in order to develop new skills in design, and the STEM returners program allowed me that opportunity.

How did STEM Returners help?

I was given support throughout the application and interview process for the opening at Wood. The 3-month STEM Returners program was a fantastic way to integrate into the company and re-familiarize myself with using software such as AutoCAD and Inventor. I was given a training project to work on initially and the team I was assigned to were always happy to answer my questions and give additional training. Very quickly I was assigned project work where I could work with more experienced designers and learn from them.

What was the end result?

After my STEM program I was offered a permanent position within the company which I happily accepted and I have been there for over 6 months now.

How has it changed your career?

This program has been a pivotal moment in my career, allowing me to transition into a role with clear opportunities for growth. It has boosted my confidence and re-ignited my passion for design and engineering. Now, I feel more equipped and motivated to take on challenges and advance in my career.

What would you say about the programme overall?

I would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to return to an engineering-based role. It offers a fantastic opportunity to reintegrate into a fast-paced industry and helps build confidence in your own abilities and skills.

Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?

Remember, your past experience is valuable, and with dedication, you can successfully transition back into your desired role.
