Tell us about you.

I grew up on an island in the Scottish Hebrides and have always enjoyed adventure and the great outdoors. This led me to study for a Geology BSc at Imperial College London with a view to becoming a volcanologist.

What was your working background before your career break?

Once I realised all the famous volcanologists had died in pyroclastic flows, I decided working offshore in oil and gas might be safer.  After gaining a place on a Graduate Well Engineer programme I spent the next 12 years working offshore in various roles. I loved the offshore life working hard in challenging environments with some amazing teams making lifelong friends and the satisfaction of completing complex engineering programmes. Then relaxing and travelling the world in my down time.

Tell us about your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?

After starting a family, I no longer wanted to work offshore but not being based in Aberdeen meant I could not find any onshore industry related work in my local area. So, I then moved to working in academic research supporting clinical trials. My break turned into 12 years away from the sector.

What made you want to return to the industry?

I always missed my professional career and after the pandemic with the move to more remote working I wondered if I would be able to find work back in the sector. I decided to upskill again by doing a short course at the University of Aberdeen in Offshore Structures and Subsea Systems. I quickly realised I was back in my element listening to lecturers talk about equipment and operations I had first hand experience of. I chose another course and eventually signed up for the full MSc in Decommissioning.

What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?

The main challenge was a lack of confidence and trying to figure out what roles I would be taken seriously for with such a big gap – could I really rely on my previous work experience from such a long time ago. I was determined that I would get back to an engineering role, but I definitely had long periods of time wondering if I would.

Why did you approach STEM Returners?

I saw STEM Returners and instantly thought this is exactly what I am looking for – this is me!

How did STEM Returners help?

Initially the returner stories helped me realise that people just like me had found new jobs and that gave me the confidence to apply for roles. It took a while to find the right position as my background offshore was a bit niche, but I kept checking the website and eventually my current role came up. STEM Returners were incredibly supportive when I called to ask about the position, and this spurred me on to apply.

What was the end result?

I now have a fantastic job as a senior engineer working on interesting projects with a fantastic team at Frazer-Nash.

How has this changed your career?

I feel like I have a career again rather than just a job. I am now working in consulting which is new for me. It took a little while to get used to a different way of working but I really enjoy feeling like my input is valued. After a 6 month Returnship I was delighted to be offered a permanent role.

What would you say about the programme overall?

It is a great programme that helped me get an interview for a role that my CV may have been overlooked for without STEM Returners support.

Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?

Just to keep going, keep reminding yourself of your professional self and all that you have achieved, just because you have had a gap those skills and talents are still within you. Good Luck.
