Mott MacDonald

This programme has been designed to support people who have had a career break or are trying to transfer their skills in to a new sector or one they used to work in. We know that any gap in work experience or a move away from a sector or skill set makes it very hard to return or join through standard recruitment channels.

The roles in this programme tend to run on a 12 week placement with a view to securing a permanent role at the end of that period.

Although it’s not guaranteed, 96% of our candidates who join the programme go on to secure permanent roles with their host organisation.

As a candidate working with STEM Returners you have access to free CV writing and Interview coaching, and if you are successful in securing the role you’ll get access to coaching and mentoring programme to help you thrive in the role.

Applicants must have the legal right to work in the UK without requiring employer sponsorship, as visa sponsorship is not available through these programmes. We warmly welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and value the diverse skills, experiences and perspectives returners bring.

Job Description

Our transport planners help shape how people and places are connected. Working with national bodies, combined authorities and local authorities, we turn evidence into clear policies, strategies, business cases and funding submissions that support better investment decisions. Our work spans local schemes and ambitious mass transit, active travel and bus programmes, through to major UK projects such as HS2, Northern Powerhouse Rail, East West Rail and Heathrow Expansion. Across this portfolio, we help clients tackle priorities including sustainable travel, decarbonisation, regeneration, accessibility and public health.

As a Transport / Senior Transport Planner, based in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield or Newcastle, you will contribute to transport policy, strategy and business case projects. Depending on your experience and the level at which you join, you may deliver technical analysis, manage defined work packages, present findings to clients and stakeholders, and contribute to project scopes, fee proposals, bids and wider business development. At Senior Transport Planner level, you may also coordinate project delivery, manage priorities, quality and deadlines, review work, and support less-experienced colleagues. The role offers varied work, support to develop your transport knowledge and the opportunity to influence real investment decisions.

We welcome different perspectives, non-traditional career paths and applications from people returning after a career break. We value transferable skills and potential, and will provide support to refresh relevant knowledge where needed. If the role interests you but you do not meet every point in the candidate specification, we still encourage you to apply.

Candidate Specification

We are looking for someone who enjoys using evidence to understand how people and places are connected and to solve problems. You may come from transport planning or bring transferable experience from economics, human or behavioural sciences, and spatial analysis, data or business analysis, engineering or planning. Relevant skills may have been gained through work, study, volunteering or another route.

Essential requirements

To be successful in the role, you will need to demonstrate the following. These capabilities may have been developed in transport or in another analytical or spatial field:

  • An undergraduate degree in a relevant analytical, spatial, social science, planning or engineering subject, or equivalent analytical experience gained through work or another route
  • Strong numerical, analytical or spatial skills, including the ability to interpret information, identify patterns and reach clear, evidence-based conclusions
  • Experience using spreadsheets, data visualisation, databases or other analytical tools to organise, analyse or present information, with the ability to learn new tools where required
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to explain analysis and complex information to non-specialist audiences
  • A collaborative and organised approach to delivering work. For appointment at Senior Transport Planner level, this should include experience of coordinating tasks or projects, supporting colleagues, or working with clients and stakeholders; this experience does not need to have been gained in transport

Location:

  • Leeds / Sheffield / Newcastle / Manchester / Liverpool
