Andrew’s career had always been about problem-solving and innovation, but after years in the industry, he realised something was missing—balance. Stepping away from work allowed him to focus on family and reassess his priorities.

When he decided to return, he faced self-doubt and job market challenges, but persistence led him to a new role in an unexpected industry. Here’s Andrew’s story.

What was your working background before your career break?

I began my career in the automotive industry as a Manufacturing Engineer. I then moved on to become a Production Engineer. My career then began to develop as a Mechanical and Software design engineer, where I was responsible for developing a number of printers and even managed to gain a patent for one of my inventions. I progressed to Systems Engineer where I was responsible for specifying the products, and I was also the design authority. I was made redundant during the pandemic, but quickly returned to the workforce as a Project Engineer managing a number of complex industrial automation projects over a 2 ½ year period. I realised during this time that I was not enjoying life as much as I should, and family became the priority during a much-needed career break which I was fortunate to be able to afford.

Tell us about  your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?

I was really unhappy in my role and there were personal reasons that meant that I was needed more at home. This was a busy and fulfilling time for just under a year and also meant that I caught up on loads of DIY that I hadn’t previously been able to do. Although I enjoyed the break from work, I started to feel ready for a new challenge, so when the opportunity to join BAE Systems came, it felt that the time was right.

What made you want to return to the industry?

I felt that I was still young and ambitious enough to make a meaningful contribution to the industry, and as stated, I was ready for a new challenge.

What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?

There are many challenges that face you when returning from a break; lack of confidence (can I still do this), am I too old to start again? Is my knowledge up to date? Explaining to people that you have been deliberately out of work without sounding lazy or weak. Also, for a while the number of suitable opportunities was disappointing, and the number of rejections and lack of responses does affect your morale.

How did STEM Returners help?

STEM Returners provided a lot of advice and support during my application to BAE including a very useful pre-interview session that really helped to calm any nerves I may have had. Before STEM Returners I felt as though I was on my own and the only person in this position, but soon learned that this absolutely wasn’t true. It was a huge boost to my confidence and self-esteem to know that there was someone out there to help.

What was the end result?

I began my 12-week STEM Returners Programme with BAE Systems in October 2024. About half way through this period there was talk of extending this, and then with 2 weeks until the end of my programme, I was offered a permanent position.

How has this changed your career?

This has genuinely given my career a new lease of life. I am working in an industry I never thought I would, gaining new experiences and knowledge at a time when I could have thought my career may be over.

What would you say about the programme overall?

I think the programme is exactly what many people in my position need. Not only does it boost your confidence, give advice and support, but also provides routes into the industry that weren’t previously available.

Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?

Embrace the opportunity with open arms, help like this doesn’t come along very often. You are not alone; you are not too old.

No one is judging you.
