Tell us about yourself:
My name is Gary. I was born in China and earned a bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering there. I moved to the UK for work about 18 years ago and have spent the last 20 years working for the same company. As a result, I haven’t had much experience looking for jobs in the UK until recently.
What was your working background before your career break?
In the early years of my career, I worked as an engineer in both hardware and software fields. Over the past 15 years, my focus has been on wireless communications. I have held various roles, including applications engineer, test engineer, and customer support engineer.

Tell us about your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?
My career break was not by choice—I was made redundant about a year ago due to workforce reductions. After that, I took a couple of months off before actively searching for a new role.
What made you want to return to the industry?
I have always enjoyed working with technology and hands-on problem-solving. Returning to work is not just about having a job; it’s also about reconnecting with people and being part of a collaborative environment.
What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?
My previous experience was quite specialized, which meant that job opportunities in my field were limited. Many roles required high-level qualifications or expertise in slightly different areas, making it difficult to be considered. Additionally, I felt that some employers in fast-growing industries preferred younger candidates. This made the job search process quite challenging and, at times, discouraging.
Why did you approach STEM Returners?
I was contacted by a STEM Returners representative about a hardware test engineering role at Domino Printing Sciences. Initially, I didn’t have high expectations, as I assumed it was just another recruitment agency.
How did STEM Returners help?
The STEM Returners team was incredibly supportive. They helped me refine my CV, provided interview guidance, and even conducted a mock interview, which boosted my confidence—especially since I had never had to search for jobs in the UK before.
During the three-month placement, they regularly checked in to see if I needed any support.
What was the end result?
My interview went very well, and I received a job offer shortly after the first round. I was given a three-month placement opportunity.
How has this changed your career?
This role is in a completely new industry, but the team has been welcoming and supportive. There’s a lot to learn, and I feel energized by the challenge. I’m really enjoying working with new technologies and developing new skills.
What would you say about the programme overall?
The STEM Returners programme is a fantastic opportunity to connect with professionals, learn new skills, and explore different industries. It is well-structured, with training, mentoring, and continuous support throughout the process.
Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?
If you’re struggling to find opportunities after a career break, this programme is designed for you. Even if the opportunity is in a different industry, it’s worth giving it a try. You may surprise yourself with how capable you are, and it can help rebuild your confidence.
