After building a hands-on career in technical drawing and fabrication, Angelika stepped away from industry to support her family through relocation and early parenthood. Years later, when her daughter started nursery, Angelika set her sights on returning to work.

But picking up where she left off wasn’t simple. Job applications went unanswered, and confidence took a hit. This is how she overcame those challenges and restarted her career in design.

Tell us a little about yourself:

I’m originally from Poland and moved to Scotland when I was 12. My passion for technical drawings began when I took my first Graphic Communication class in secondary school. That interest stayed with me and eventually led me to study Architectural Technology at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen.

What was your working background before your career break?

Before my career break, I worked for a steel prefabrication company where I was involved in everything from site surveys and laser scanning to producing fabrication drawings. I truly enjoyed the hands-on, technical side of the role.

Angelika - a STEM returner

Why did you take a break from your career, and what made you want to return to the industry?

My break from the industry came after I married a military man and moved to Cyprus for a couple of years. Just before returning to Scotland, I became pregnant and chose to stay home to raise my baby girl. I spent a few wonderful years focusing on my family, but once my daughter was old enough to attend nursery, I knew it was time to restart my career—not just for myself, but to build a better future for her.

What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?

Returning to work wasn’t easy. I applied to countless jobs but rarely received responses or interview invitations. It was disheartening and left me feeling defeated. Then I came across a STEM Returners job, and it felt like the perfect opportunity: a structured path back into the industry with professional support along the way.

How did STEM Returners help?

STEM Returners played a key role in helping me re-enter the workforce. They organised an interview for me—something I had been struggling to secure on my own—and provided guidance to help me prepare and present myself confidently. Within days of the interview, I received a job offer, and with STEM Returners by my side, I was finally back doing what I love.

What would you say about the programme overall?

Now, I’m three months into my new role, working in my field again and excited about the future. Getting back into industry was the hardest part, but it’s opened the door to new growth and opportunities.

Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?

To anyone thinking about returning after a break, my advice is: never give up. It might feel daunting at first, but once you take that step, you’ll be glad you did. Programmes like STEM Returners are here to see your potential and help you shine. The sky truly is the limit!
