Tell us about you.

I am an electrical engineer originally from the Middle East, with a master’s degree in electrical engineering and more than two decades of experience in the design and delivery of electrical infrastructure projects. My career has focused on sustainable infrastructure, including power systems, energy efficiency, and modern technologies such as solar PV and EV charging systems.

I am passionate about engineering innovation and practical problem solving. Outside of work, I enjoy learning about emerging technologies, sharing knowledge with younger engineers, and creating educational technical content related to electrical engineering and sustainability.

What was your working background before your career break?

Before my career break, I worked as a Lead Electrical Engineer and project leader on large-scale infrastructure and building projects across several sectors including residential, commercial, industrial, and oil & gas.

My responsibilities included electrical design, project management, stakeholder coordination, and overseeing construction and commissioning activities. I also worked on energy optimisation initiatives, solar systems, EV charging infrastructure, and smart electrical solutions.

Over the years I developed strong technical expertise while also managing multidisciplinary teams and delivering complex projects safely and efficiently.

Tell us about your career break. Why did you take a break? How long was it for?

My career break occurred when I relocated to the UK with my family. The transition involved settling into a new country, understanding the local engineering standards and job market, and preparing myself to enter the UK engineering industry.

The break lasted several months while I focused on adapting to the UK professional environment, reviewing local standards, and aligning my experience with the UK engineering framework.

Although the break was relatively short, it created a gap that sometimes-raised questions during job applications.

What made you want to return to the industry?

Engineering has always been a major part of my professional identity and passion. I enjoy solving technical challenges and contributing to infrastructure that benefits society.

The UK is currently investing heavily in energy transition, renewable technologies, and electrical infrastructure. Being part of this transformation was very motivating for me, and I wanted to contribute my experience while continuing to grow professionally within the UK engineering sector.

What challenges have you faced when applying for roles? How did those challenges make you feel?

One of the main challenges was that despite having extensive international experience, employers sometimes focused heavily on recent UK experience.

Like many professionals returning to the workforce, I noticed that even a short career gap can make it harder to get past the first stage of recruitment.

At times this was frustrating because I knew I had strong technical knowledge and a lot to offer. However, I remained positive and continued improving my understanding of the UK engineering environment and standards.

Why did you approach STEM Returners?

I discovered STEM Returners while searching for programmes designed to help experienced professionals return to the engineering industry.

What attracted me most was that the Programme recognises the value of experienced engineers and helps bridge the gap between career breaks and employment opportunities.

It provided a structured pathway and support system, which gave me confidence that my experience would be recognised.

How did STEM Returners help?

The programme provided guidance, encouragement, and direct connections with companies that are open to hiring experienced professionals returning to the industry.

It also helped highlight the importance of transferable skills and experience, rather than focusing only on recent employment history.

The support from the programme made a significant difference in rebuilding confidence and opening doors to opportunities.

What was the end result?

Through the programme, I was able to reconnect with the engineering industry and secure a professional opportunity aligned with my experience and skills.

It allowed me to demonstrate my capabilities again and continue contributing to engineering projects and infrastructure development.

How has this changed your career?

The experience has helped me re-establish my professional path in the UK engineering sector.

It also reinforced the value of continuous learning, adaptability, and resilience. Returning to the industry has given me new motivation to further develop my expertise and contribute to the energy transition and sustainable engineering solutions.

What would you say about the programme overall?

The STEM Returners programme plays a very important role in helping experienced engineers restart their careers.

There are many talented professionals whose careers pause for valid reasons, and programmes like this help ensure that valuable knowledge and experience are not lost.

It is a supportive and practical initiative that benefits both professionals and the engineering industry.

Do you have any advice for returners like yourself?

My advice is to stay confident in your experience and skills. A career break does not erase the knowledge and value you bring. Continue learning, stay connected with industry developments, and be open to new opportunities. Programmes like STEM Returners can be a great bridge back into the industry, and they show that there are organisations that truly recognise the value of experienced professionals returning to work.
